How to Choose a Dress According to Body Type

Since dresses are diverse and have different patterns and designs, it could be difficult to understand what would suit your body type. Wearing a dress that suits your body type ensures the best fit, which, in turn, would make you feel confident. Many types of dresses available usually look good when you see it on a mannequin or in a catalog. However, when you try it on, you may realize that it doesn’t suit you. This is because the dress you chose doesn’t match your body type.

Since not everyone has the same height, weight, or overall body shape, not all styles may suit them. The first step is to know your body type, based on which you can then select your outfit. Body types and how to dress:

1. Hourglass body type
This body type is what women covet the most. Here, the bust and hips are the same in size. The waist is slender and the overall body is curvy. The clothes for the hourglass body type should accentuate the waist since it is the slimmest. The dress should fit your curves perfectly. Wrap style dresses, silk, soft fabrics, V-neck dresses, and body-hugging outfits are best suited for an hourglass figure.

2. Apple-shaped body
The apple-shaped body is like an inverted triangle. The size of the upper body is more than the lower body. The shoulders are broad and the bust line is wide. Here, the waist is not well-proportioned.
The apple-shaped body is heavy on the midriff, hence the dress must highlight the lower half. You can wear dresses that show off your legs. Additionally, dresses that have a v-neck or are strapless will make your upper body look longer and would be suitable. A-line dresses are ideal for this body type.

3. Pear-shaped body
Those who have a pear-shaped body have narrow shoulders and a small bust. The waist, however, is well-defined and the hips are full. If you have a pear body type, you need to select a dress that highlights your lower body. It would make you look as though you have an hourglass figure. A-line dresses, pants with wide legs, loose tops, and skinny jeans are suitable for this body type. The tops should accentuate your shoulders.

4. Rectangular body type
Also known as an athletic body type, here the body is not curvy. The shoulders, waist, and hips are the same in size. It is a well-proportioned body type. The dress you wear should focus on your waist. You can consider sleeveless and short dresses. Layered tops and A-line dresses are well-suited for this body type. Mini skirts and tights can make your body look proportioned. Moreover, you should draw focus towards your waist to give it the illusion of a curvy waistline.
